Description
After the Sunday drive in Ken's Vette with his dad, Andreas Jr. didn't miss an opportunity to bring up the subject and rattle on and on about how much fun it was driving that magnificent machine and gee, wouldn't it be great if they could get one of their own. Finally, Andreas Sr. had enough and started scolding his son, pleading with him to lighten up about the subject. After all, times were tough and they barely had enough money to cover their basic needs, let alone taking on extra expense for some 'pie in the sky' dream about owning their own Vette. This went on for about a month. In the meantime, Andreas Sr. got to know Ken in accounting better. They met for lunch a few times and even spent an evening or two after work tipping a few at the local tavern. Over the course of the month, Ken listened to Andreas telling him how crazy his son was about getting their own Vette and just how impossible it was in their financial situation. Ken had them take his Vette out again one Sunday afternoon, even though Andreas Sr. didn't think it was such a good idea. Only refuel his son's desire for a Vette all the more, just when he was starting to calm down about it. But, in the end, father relented and they had another great day together driving the open road and roaring down the highways.
When they returned Ken's Vette, he asked them to come around to the lot behind his apartment. A shocked look came over Andreas Sr.'s face as he gazed down upon the object Ken asked them to inspect. It was an battered looking older Vette, about the same year as Ken's. He had the hood open and beckoned them over to give it a looksee. Ken explained that he had an old friend that had this particular car sitting in his old barn for the past several years. He had always planned on restoring it, but decided he was just getting too old to take on the project. When Ken told him about his new friends and how they were wishing they could afford a Vette, the old guy got a glimmer in his eye and told Ken that if they were as good a friends as Ken thought they were, he would be glad to give them a good deal on the car and even let them use his old barn to work on it.
Ken told Andreas Sr and Jr this story and then told Sr. how much the old man wanted for the car. Andreas first reaction was still that they couldn't afford it. But a few yearning looks and vocal pleadings from his son and having Ken say that he would be glad to help with the work any way he could, Andreas Sr. soon realized he was outnumbered. Ken told him that as bad as this car looked, it was still in better shape than his was when he first got it. He had restored it while working his way through college and had learned so much from the experience he was very glad he had done it!
So, father and son shook Ken's hand and told him they would take on the project. Andreas Sr. worried about telling his wife and how to manage the extra expense. Jr. said that he would get another part-time job. Father was still wincing about telling his wife, but with Jr's help, he figured they could do it.
They followed Ken out to the old man's farm. You could see the excitement in both guys eyes as they parked the Vette in the old man's barn. His name was Ben and he took a shine to the father and son right away. He could see they were both of good character and that they would be a good couple to get to know. Ben was looking forward to seeing how they approached this restoration too. He had many ideas and told them that if they needed help with anything or just some advice, he was there to provide anything he could.
Looks like we know where these guys will be spending their spare time for the next forseeable future!

An important lesson here mate, something worth having can take a while to acquire, and if you acquire it through decent hard work then so much the better, especially if you learn something extra on the way too! I wish I could have done something like this when I had the energy and enthusiasm (and time) when I was younger, sadly back then, having the cash would have been an issue! Nice one Radders!

excellent work and inspiring story. but i must say i am glad i did not carried out my fathers dreams considering he was somewhat "psychidiotic". in todays time they would have locked him up and protected our mother and my brothers and my sister. in the old days it was quite normal (in the industrial part of luxembourg it still is common)that a husband beat his kids and wife. well it was a hard school and i survived!!!!!!!!!!!
