Description

I occasionally get fixations on things. I'll want to know everything about a subject, do all the research, and then file it away for future reference; or the next bout of obsession. Right now I've got a Stanley Kubrick mojo going, so everything reminds me of his movies. As I was going through my photo morgue, this shot, made inside a coffee house, jumped out at me. I suspect it's the position of the overhead lights and the overall austerity of the composition, but Douglass Rain's HAL9000 voice from "2001: A Space Odyssey" said to me, "I'm sorry, Dave, but I'm afraid I can't make coffee right now." This is how my brain works. Photographed at The Perfect Cup at Damen and Leland Avenues in the Ravenswood area of Chicago on October 25, 2011.

Whoot! I know very little about SK's work unless it is orange but I love this...the wide minimalistic view, the reflective wooden table top, the outside detail...all combine to make a very fascinating image. Top marks my friend.

Oh. Yes. This. Is. Quite. A. Nice. Photograph. I. Like. This. A. Lot. Okay, that was my best Kubrickian human voice. Funny how HAL-9000 seemed more human than most of the characters in quite a lot of Kubrick's work. And now I've got HAL stuck in my head: and I wonder if Dave Bowman and Frank Poole are sitting just out of camera range, discussing the matter concerning HAL and how no 9000 has ever fouled up before...and of course they have no choice but to ignore the Failure Mode Analysis and keep the communications gear in operation, let it fail and then backtrack the flaw. I wonder, then, if there's someone in the coffee-house (also out of view) reading their lips? Okay, I've seen 2001: A Space Odyssey far too many times (and I can even point the aliens out to you...they make a symbolic appearance in the move, and the only thing that gives their appearance away is a bit of "coherence." And now that I've rambled on about stuff that isn't even related to this picture, I'll have to say that I absolutely love this shot. It's so...well...it looks as if you were drinking coffee off of one of those black monoliths...and who knows...maybe you were. This is fantastic.

Well, there IS a bit of orange in the exit sign... And I can hear Hal's voice as well... This is really quite a cool capture, Corey - I like it!

I'm glad I'm not the only one to have serial OCD's. I love the pic.

Oh man. What's not to like about this picture! It rocks! I LOVE the reflections in the tabletop, the view out the windows, the items on the tables inside. It's like being "in" and "out" at the same time. Excellent shot! I'm sitting at my desk where I sit and drink coffee every morning, and I can tell you that Stanley Kubrick never drank coffee here, either. Weird coincidence, huh? I knew you'd want to know. :P

When I first looked at this picture, it made me think of a Degas painting called "L'Absinthe" without the man and woman on the far right side of the painting. Your lighting is much nicer than the painting tho. Right on!! The reflections in the tables are stunning.

THe POV in this shot is incredible, down low on the table to emphasize the reflections, the angles, it's a true masterpiece. Juxtaposing that with the HAL9000 voice is just too funny, imagining HAL running a coffee shop tickles parts of my brain that aren't used to such humor, but usually devote themselves to contemplating the physics or orbiting bodies and solar winds. fantastic image, and a fascinating glimpse into how your mind works.
