Description
Bhutan has an active government sponsored environmental policy. Trekkers and mountain climbers must be accompanied by a Bhutanese guide. Everything that is brought in must be brought out. Everything, if you know what I mean. The country is very mountainous and covered with forests. Bhutan's model is "To contribute to the gross national happiness". Like many countries, Bhutan sends many of its most talented students overseas for advanced education. It is a point of pride that, while students of many other countries never come home, some ninety-eight per cent of Bhutanese return home after their education is finished.
Tourism is strictly limited. Looking next door, the government of Bhutan has seen what happened to Nepal when it allowed unlimited tourism. Overrun with Westerners, Nepal experienced an increase in crime and drug use. Many Nepalese adopted Western ways which often included a thoughtless pursuit of material possessions. When I visited Nepal in 1980 the capital, Kathmandu, was a small town similar to those I saw in Bhutan. By 2000 it was one of the most polluted and crowded cities in the world. So far Bhutan seems to have resisted this "progress".

Your descriptions of Bhutan certainly make me want to move there. So it's good they have their rules, and the enlightened government they seem to have. It looks like paradise in the mountains. Beautiful shot. Thanks for this trip too!

I am pleased to read, that Bhutan will probably never be overrun by tourists - but on the other hand, we would have never known about this little bit of heavenly paradise, if it wasn't for a tourist like you, to tell us all about it! Also, if most of those students return, I am sure, they are bringing back home some of our bad habits, sadly - but true, don't you think? and now to your pic - a wonderful and pristine looking environment and superb image, love it! Beautiful capture of this wonderful landscape and the clouds. The monastery is beautiful with the bright yellow roofs and all the layers. Very interesting information. It is nice to hear of a government that is working and for the good of all its people.
