Description

I always try to visit Hoover Dam each time I go to Las Vegas - my gallery shows I've been there a few times. On every visit I've tried to take a tour of the dam but usually the lines are huge. During my visit in early October I hit a lull in the crowds and managed to take the power plant tour - the shorter of two available. It was an very interesting event - a short movie telling us about the building of the dam then an elevator descent to the base of the dam with a walk through one of the tunnels dug to divert the Colorado River while the dam was being built ( it was HUGE) and then a visit to the Nevada side power house. Here you see the eight huge generators capable of generating more than 1000 megawatts. The Arizona side has one more generator. The tour was well worth it to learn how this massive structure was constructed and how it serves to produce electricity for the surrounding states -there are also many interesting exhibits in the visitor center which is included in the price of your ticket. There's a longer tour that gets more into the depths of the dam - I'm going to try and take that tour next time. Enjoy

Immaculate...just what I'd hope to find inside such a mighty piece of human engineering. Guess we'll have to add this tour to our bucket list;-) Well done!

I love industrial places, and this is a perfect capture of real grandeur! Who needs cathedrals and stuff like that when you have power plants and dams. OK...cathedrals are nice, but I love stuff with machines and generators, and all sorts of heavy things in them. This is marvelous! I'd love to visit that place some day.
