Description

Good evening everyone. Still in a rush these days. Still much to do in this last week before Christmas. But not to worry, there will be Sunsirae's traditional chess match this Christmas Eve for the fifth year running. For those of you who wish to catch up, the previous editions are on my Featured Images page. As you can see I've been playing around with Vue again. I wanted to create a Christmas tree akin to the trees I put together when I was a boy - before LEDs and mini bulbs, when the world was flat. The colourful and artful Christmas tree is perhaps the most splendid part of the holiday. And I cringe when I hear someone suggest that, "we don't really need a Christmas tree to properly celebrate Christmas". Well, yes you do and it is the one time us square people finally let their hair down a decorate properly. Arranging the lights was key. Colours and reflectors (yes, full fledged aluminum reflectors nesting 4V bulbs) had to be carefully chosen, tested and placed. Just as many lights had to be inside the branches as on the exterior. This created a back lit look on the branches and ornaments. Older, faded bulbs were the best for that job, the spires and balls dangled from branches on fishing thread and looked like mystical planets orbiting in close formation. Yellow bulbs were kept to a minimum as they were often too bright and overwhelmed the tree. White lights were never used. My trees were crafted things taking much of a Saturday afternoon and evening. At night, the lights penetrating the branches painted extraordinary coloured patters on the white stucco ceiling. It was nearly as impressive a show as the tree itself. I'm sorry to say that this rendering really does not capture all that glory but it has the same spirit I think. Alas, one of the prices of married life is that my spouse decides the decor of the Christmas tree these days. As you can imagine, her tastes in how a tree should look are very different from my own. Solid deep amber (not yet available on LED format) being the traditional look for her. Now, I will admit, her trees do look pretty good. But they're not my trees. Thus, to satisfy my inner child this holiday season, I have taken to crafting my own tree in cyberspace. There, the idea of the perfect tree shall live on for all eternity. Or until Homeland Security purges it from the race memory for its socialist message. Thank you Stephen Harper. Have a great weekend everybody and thank you for viewing. Cheers!

Beautiful tree! I thoroughly enjoyed your narrative. I agree with it all except...where are the blinking lights. Not flashers (who thought of such a name?) but the old blinkers that blinked on . . . then blinked off . . . . . . then back on . . . . . . . . then off . . then (you get the idea.) They weren't synchronized and you didn't need a lot of them. Just a few scattered in the tree so that the colors and patterns on the ceiling changed. Lying on the carpet, without a care in the world, talking to my sisters, listening to Christmas music, and watching the changing patterns. One of my favorite memories of Christmas. Excellent image! The Christmas tree is beautiful. I love the variation of the lights and the light coming from the crowning star. Lovely light on the snow and the near tree. I like the dimly seen trees and stars in the distance. Very nicely done!
