Description

Captured 10/18/09, around 12 noon, in the beautiful Chinese section of the beautiful Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens in beautiful San Marino, California. Don't bother zooming. The happy one, suspended in mid air, apparently giving thanks to nature for the bountiful crop of lush green flora in the gardens. Either that, or he's exclaiming "I think it's beginning to rain!" And where is everybody? The seven or eight comments per posting I've been receiving lately just won't hack it. Bye-bye, thankx for the peek, and for any and all favs and noncritical comments

This is certainly the happiest Buddha I've yet come across! Nice shot!

That is a beautiful sculpture! Wish I could have it, especially if he is doing the rain dance. (I want snow - MN is brown now... )

If he is doing a rain dance, tell him to dance towards San Antonio. We've had a bit of rain the last couple of weeks but could still do with a drought busting steady downpour. Excellent capture! Superb detail!

This is my favourite Buddha pose, and I have been tempted more than once to get one from a nearby shop. I like the all the greens. A lovely pic.

Very unique piece. The Palm leaves behind really set it off well.

He is a jolly round buddha, isn't he? Maybe The Joyful Buddha? Yes, the palms really do make a great background for this excellent capture, Harry!

very bright lighting on this, harry, bringing out the full spectrum of his happiness and embrace of everything around him. You did him fine service. Laughing Buddhas are a whole category in the Orient; you don't see them often in India, where buddhas originated. He is joyous, almost dancing, and his stomach is full to indicate fulfillment & contentment. (His real name, in Japan, is "Hotei," and I think "budai" in Chinese---don't quote me, though!) The Indian Buddha, having spent (in legend) many months in austerity & meditation, is depicted as very thin. But Hotei is depicted as rolly-polly, thus all the austerity removed. And the legends say that if one rubs his belly, they will get happiness & good fortune. (Right. Try that on some guy on the street...) You captured the pure essence of this joyous legend, and he could be dancing for rain as long as rain is joyous; or he could just be very happy to be alive. Visually, given the profusion of green in this shot, you've captured the highlights & shadows very well. Not an easy to do, I'd presume. (All that green can present problems, I'd think.) And the frontal pov makes him almost hold up the world behind him. Truly perfect to the spirit of the figure...
