Description
King Suryavarman II died in 1150, possibly during an invasion of Champa (present day southern Viet Nam). Thirty-one years later Jayavarman VII (Victorious Warrior) became king after defeating the Champa in yet another war. During his reign he built his own temple called Bayon in the center of his new capital Angkor Thom. The first Lara Croft film was shot in Angkor Thom.
Wanting the world to know what a handsome fellow he was, he had his visage created in monumental stone for all to see. That's him below, and again, and again.

Interesting visage because they all show him with his eyes closed which might be indicative of something other than modesty.

I love this. That must be a stunning thing to see in person. I think my jaw would be on the floor.

Self-aggrandisement has brought us some spectacular monuments! The powerful, pompous and pecunious manage somehow to enrich the world, whatever their original motives.

THOSE HEADS ARE A MASTERPIECE

Beautiful! The closest face looks very serene. I love the detail on the lips. I remember Angkor Thom and these heads from National Geographic too. I'd love to see it in person. I found some video clips from National Geographic that talk about the building of Angkor Wat. There is some interesting information about the stone, Laterite, used for the interior support of the structure. http://natgeotv.com/uk/ancient-megastructures/videos/angkor-wat-magic-stone Excellent capture! Wonderful detail, composition, and POV.
