Description

Donner Lake is frozen about 30 feet out. Not very thick, and the wind breaks it up. Yesterday just before sunset, we walked along the shore and I heard the MOST amazing sound. There were chunks of ice being knocked together and it sounded like bells!! Though someone else said they thought it sounded like ice in a cocktail!! It was really quite wonderful.

The sound is similar to that of ice breaking up in the spring if it is driven by wind and it is an extraordinary sound! Nice shot!

Very nice and interesting photo. As long as the ice is thin like here, the sound is very nice, like a tinkling of bells. However, when it gets thick and starts pushing up on land it becomes a grinding, grating, jarring sound that can be quite frightening. And, better keep out of its way!
