Description

Captured locally back on 12/9/05. Since several of the members welcomed in 2012 with cloud and sky scenes, I thought I'd toss in my contribution of the genre. Ta-ta, happy new year, thankx for the look-see, and for any and all favs and noncritical comments.

Clouds over California...say it isn't so:-) A fine opening for the new year Harry. A very worthy study of nature's constant presentation light and shadows. You live in a wonderful place.

An auspicious beginning, with this lovely sky capture, Harry. Dad was watching the Rose Bowl today, and I saw that it was in the 80s down in your neck of the woods; I hope you were enjoying the games. We've got rain and wind, but still no proper winter here.

when I saw this at the time, I thought: In chicago there aren't too many clouds on Jan 1st: They freeze and drop out of the sky! (I think my new year shot was something from Mars.) This is another of your dramatic & beautiful cloud 'spreads', a whole ocean of shapes with dark undersides & vivid light pouring-through at every turn. The tree is all you need to "orient" the shot---ie, telling us you were on the ground, rather than in an airplane or on some high point---so we know this is the ceiling over your city. Very dramatic, and high contrast. Also, a very positive shot for the new year. (I read Denise mention that you were in the 80s on NYDay. Man. What opposites two cities have in the same country! My terror in shooting in Dec & Jan is of falling: The ice can be so prevalent, one misstep and you're down. And ice doesn't have "give": I have bruises from my outings; and sometimes I couldn't get up at all, ala your comment on the orchid photographer. And it's always disheartening when young people call you "Sir" and ask if you're able to move. Fact is, the lake & beach are one huge sheet of ice in winter, and you jump into the abyss when you go out there with your camera. So New Year's shots, for me, are a matter of "I'm goin' in: If I don't come back, save my photos...") Fine & dramatic capture.
