Description

Door County’s Historic Eagle Bluff Lighthouse As the Civil War’s firestorm was extinguished, and the North and South stood once more united, pioneers discovered the riches of northeastern Wisconsin. But the trek westward from the cultured east coast was challenging, an arduous journey of hundreds of miles through the frontier. Traveling through the St. Lawrence Seaway, down the Erie Canal, and through the Great Lakes, the schooners and steamboats that carried the new immigrants and settlers were constantly in harm’s way. The journey was long and difficult…the waters dangerous. If not for the lighthouses hugging the shoreline, clinging to rocky bluffs, or speckling solitary islands, many a ship would never have seen dry land. Perched on a bluff 76 feet above Green Bay’s glistening waters, Eagle Bluff Lighthouse’s lamp brought solace to many a sailor suffering through a storm’s gale or the dark of night. And today the tradition of the lighthouse continues. Restored to its past glory, Eagle Bluff Lighthouse Museum is a tribute to the keepers who kept the lamp lit on many a dark and stormy night. Guiding guests through the lighthouse and its grounds, knowledgeable docents share the personal stories of the keepers who manned the light from 1868 – 1926. Furnished with some of the keepers’ original furnishings, as well as, authentic period antiques, the Eagle Bluff Lighthouse Museum is a story of not only the men who toiled through the night, but also their wives and children.

Thanks very much Ed for the dedi:) The architecture that you've captured here is very impressive. For all my coastal lighthouse visits, I haven't made it to any on the Great lakes stations yet. One of these days... The overall construction...materials and roof line/eaves remind me of the Memorial Chapel (1878) at Fort Leavenworth...recall a certain wedding there in 2000?

What a fascinating building! Out here on the coast (as I'm sure you know) the lighthouse keepers lived in a separate building from the light tower. Only Yaquina Bay at Newport remains as a home/light combo. Even there, the lightkeeper had a cot in the tower in order to be near the light during those all-important night-time hours. Thanks for this! :) (And thanks for the disc! We enjoyed the pics of the kids very much. The shots were much better than anything I got this fall! In particular the one of Liam using the ipad, backlit in the kitchen window, is one for your gallery.)
