Description
Born on August 6th 1911, Spangler Arlington Brugh II was raised in Beatrice Nebraska. After he graduated from Beatrice High School, 'Arly' attended Doane College in Crete Nebraska for two years. While attending Doane, 'Arly' appeared in many college plays and along with fellow students Russ Gibson and Gerhart Wiebe formed 'The Harmony Boys' in which 'Arly' played cello and sang.Transferring to Pomona Collage California 'Arly' studied medicine to become a doctor like his Father.Once again he became involved with student theatricals, often getting the lead role due to his good looks. While appearing in a play in Pomona, 'Arly' was spotted by a casting director from MGM.'Arly' was signed to a seven year contract for a staggering $35.00 per week.Never short of work 'Arly' was chosen by Greta Garbo as her leading man in 'Camille'.
With Americas entry into WWII, 'Arly' entered the U.S Navy. At 32 he was deemed to old for active/overseas duty, and so, commisioned as a Lieutenant, Spangler Arlington Brugh II was posted to the Naval Air Transport Service as a flight instructor.'Arly' contributed greatly to the war effort for besides teaching young pilots to fly, he narrated the 1944 documentary 'The Fighting Lady' which followed life aboard the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown, and he also directed 17 U.S Navy training films.
After the war 'Arly' returned to Hollywood, he went back to making movies and he went back to using his stage name 'Robert Taylor'.....
Just filling a bit of time while I wait for another delivery of silver paint.....

Thanks for the chuckle over the silver paint. And thanks for the brief history of Arly/Robert Taylor. Odd how Hollywood always had to change people's names. His job was very important - teaching and training, without which the job couldn't get done. Nice image of your DC3 coasting in for a landing (no prop blur - aw, there I go again about prop blur. Sheesh!). Keep up the good work! :-) Froggy's posted a near total loss (or so he feels about it)! He's funny.

Another "you saw it here first" for me. I knew of his acting career but not his wartime service. Some change their names due to others already being in the business with the same one, Arly I guess because it didn't quite roll off the lips. Great story and of course fantastic DC3! Will there be a TWA one?

Great image and great story about a great artist.

Great story...I never knew...! Like Maxidyne's question. I have a couple of pictures of a beauty in TWA colors in my gallery. The plane is flyable and belongs to a museum in Kansas City. I think the photo originals are stuck on an old external hard drive that no longer lets me access files...something about a corrupted file blocking my way.

You got me this time, I had never heard this story gefore. Better than Wiki this place!

Great work as always Neil, and who would have thought that Hollywood's Man in Tights would have had such a career? I will look at Quentin Durwood with less disdain in future, haha

Outstanding once again.

Robert Who? ;-) I guess it shows that there is a job for everyone in the services... The Douglas is looking fantastic nevertheless...

This paint job brings back a lot of memories. I flew twice in one of these, years later, from Japan to Korea and back again.
