Description
On the right margin my footprints can be seen, only after passing by these mules ears did the composition pop into my minds eye. It's not uncommon in this terrain that I'll do that. When reviewing the images and recalling the hike I can't help but to laugh at myself for doing an "about face". As if I wouldn't sleep that night unless I turn around and get the image...lol!
I found the sky rather white and flat in this scene. Have made use of a few things in CS5 Bill (bmac62) recommended on an approach to a scanned Bryce image. Never tried the quick mask or some of the other adjustments such as gamma correction and vibrancy. After a few tweaks, I thought this sky suited the scenery. Which got me thinking, when does the line get crossed to where an image should be placed in the manipulated photo genre?

I never get tired of these shots! I think the line gets crossed into photomanipulation when you go beyond cosmetic fixes and actually start adding and subtracting stuff. I always view the subject from a dark room style approach, if that makes sense. Not that it matters, it's the end result that counts.

I love the title, when I was looking at the layers I thought that's what you were referring to. Of course, I then read your notes and learned my error. Still, both works, and even if you didn't mean it you've produced an interesting visual pun. Very fascinating terrain, and wonderful photo!

You have to decide when to call it a manipulation. Had you not said, I would not have known, but that does not diminish the work, it suggests I should have done this to a number of my own images. But I am a realist, for the most part, and like to present my capture of what is there, but that is not neccessarily for the best. I like it!

Have felt the same way Wayne, hence my asking the manipulation question. I didn't do much to the image put having been the purest all these years it feels like the little I did is almost like cheating...lol

I think the line gets crossed when you combine more than one image. What you've done is just postwork, imho. If you took this picture and added a horse, or a roadrunner zipping past, or space aliens landing on top of the rock, you've entered the realm of photo manipulation. You added something that wasn't in the original image. Correcting the photograph, or making the scene more like what you imagined it should be, or improving the light ... those tweaks are all postwork. There's a fun thread in the Forum called "Do It To It," where someone posts an image on Monday and then all week people post their own version of that original image. It's a great way to improve your skills in Photoshop. You get to work on someone else's image (which is a GREAT way to play and learn!), and you can do anything you want. Anything from making the image more polished, to adding Martian cats. (The link is to a recent week's thread. I didn't see one for this week.) Anyway ... that's just my opinion. There are those who say if you sharpen the image you've manipulated the photograph. There are all degrees of "purist." When it comes to the genres here on RR and where you should post something ... that's not what they're talking about. They're talking about adding Martian cats, not about sharpening the image or changing the contrast and levels. Hope that helps! If not ... just ignore me. :D LOVE the image, btw. Those rocks are gorgeous, and I agree that the sky is just right for the the rest of the image. You did a great job!

What fascinating formations! Mules ears? Never heard of them - where was this taken? The photo looks great & the sky looks very natural. I sometimes will do significant work on a sky & don't consider that a photo manipulation, though strictly speaking I guess it is. If your primary aim as a photographer is to be a documentarian, then accuracy is important. If your primary aim is to create photographic art, then not so much...
