Description

Happy Birthday my good friend and many more to come. This is a Blue Morph Butterfly (Morpho peleides) and is colored in metallic, shimmering shades of blue and green. These colors are not a result of pigmentation but are an example of iridescence, the microscopic scales covering the Morphs wings reflect incident light. Thus the colors produced vary with viewing angle. The iridescent scales are only present on the dorsal side of their wings (the open wing view), leaving the ventral side (closed wing view) brown. I was sad to find the Blue Morph, in the top photo, with a damaged wing but it does give you a peek of the iridescent blue colors on the inside, while the wings are closed. Oh Dana...the first picture is pretty and you look at it and say oh, pretty...but then when the butterfly opens its wings, WOW...LOVE that blue!!!! This proves that one should not judge a person by their looks...because they may look plain on the surface, but underneath they are probably beautiful...

Super clarity and iridescence colors in this cool collage, Dana. Beautiful lighting effects. It appears there is some confusion as to whether there are one or two butterflies in the above comments. If not for your explanation I would have guessed two separate butterflies. And, Happy Birthday to Mike
