Description

Snorkeling at Agincourt Ribbon Reef. On advise from someone that had been stationed in Australia, I went with Poseidon, a company out of Port Douglas, Queensland, that provided day tours to various sites on the Great Barrier Reef for snorkeling and scuba diving. I hadn't done either before. Port Douglas is 70km north of Cairns, in the 'Tropical Wet', the rainforest region of Northeastern Queensland, Australia. They came and picked us up and provided lunch and the equipment required. We went by catamaran about and hour and a half to Agincourt Ribbon Reef. We scuba dived/snorkeled at three different sites for an hour each. Full body suits that covered the head, hands and feet, a full face mask with snorkel, and flippers were provided. The full body suit protects against the Box Jelly Fish, deadly when stung. The sights were incredible and this picture doesn't do it justice. I had bought this Casio camera just before I left, it is good for 10-ft below surface and 7-ft for dropping it. The buttons were kind of small and the shooting was kind of difficult. I missed most of the fish and the colors in this picture don't come close to the real thing. I wasn't aware of how many different kinds of coral there were. I could justify taking scuba diving lessons just to see these formations again. On the way out we were given a quick lesson on the variety of fish and how to identify them, on the type of equipment that was provided, and the safety measures taken to make sure everyone comes back. This picture was taken on 15 December 2011, Sig...

Lovely coral shot Sig, fabulous shot... My daughter and grandaughter is up that way in Townsville, and my son in law's (my other daughters husband) mother and stepfather were living in Mossman as he worked in the sugar industry there..

Sensational. It's another world down there isn't it. Concerning the Box Jellies,at least you can see them....sort of! The ones that scare me are the Irukandji. They are TINY!!!!! image host

It was the first time that I snorkeled, but I loved it. Also the camera was new and I had never taken underwater pictures. The real thing is much more spectacular. I didn't know there were that many varieties of live coral!

Fabulous Sig. I learned to scuba dive in 1956 and have been twice off the Florida Keys. Do you know that there is an underwater National Park there? I wouldn't mind getting checked out again...I went before you needed formal training and a certificate. Unfortunately my ears bothered me below ten feet.
