Description

Originally called "El Capitan" by Spanish settlers, the mountain was renamed Pike's Peak after Zebulon Pike Jr., an explorer who led an expedition to the southern Colorado area in 1806. At 14,115 feet (4,302 m) (Survey done by National Geodetic Survey), it is one of Colorado's 54 fourteeners (mountains that rise more than 14,000 feet (4,267.2 m) above mean sea level). Pikes Peak rises over 8,000 feet above the city of Colorado Springs, and is a designated National Historic Landmark. (This was taken from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) The picture was taken 42 miles away from Pike’s Peak from the road in Castle Rock, Colorado. In fact, you can see Pike’s Peak from Denver which is 63 mile from Colorado Springs. Pike’s Peak is 10 mile west of Colorado Springs. If your ever in the area, you might want to take the cog railway out of Manitou Spring to the top of the peak. They have the most delicious and light donuts at the visitor center. Visitors are only allowed to stay twenty minutes due to the high altitude. P.S. Picture was taken through several filters and HDR to bring out some of the detail.

HDR? You are ahead of me on this Ed:) I've done a little bit of reading but next to no experimenting. I know this time of the day in Colorado. The east side of the mountains fade quickly into deep shadow in the afternoon. I see you have recovered some of the detail in the shadows. Cool. I'll look forward to more. My concern with HDR is how quickly the effects can cast an unreal appearance on things.

This is awesome Ed! I love the contrast of colors! Those donuts alone will make go up the peak but I'm sure the view is breathtaking!

We thought about doing the railway thing, but we had Mandy with us, and dogs are generally not welcome on such attractions! Besides ... I was passing out at Cripple Creek, let alone going any higher. I love this view ... such a beautiful image!
