Description

Needs a full size peek to do it justice. Thank you for looking. This is one of my favorite shots of Hierapolis as it really captures the overall feel and color of walking through the ruined city itself. This is the view along Frontinus Street in Hierapolis looking towards the Byzantine Gate. This gate was built in middle of the 3rd century C.E. and so is about 300 years younger than the nearby Domitian's Gate. When we so rapidly tear down our cities as we rebuild them I was struck by these two nearby gates being separated in age by some 300 years. You can see that the Byzantine Gate was built as part of a defensive wall, unlike Domitian's gate which was retrofitted with a wall. This street was originally about 15 meters wide when it was first built by the Romans along with the Domitian Gate. The tall columns are the remains of temples, shops and public fountains. You can see why the alternate name for this street was The Monumental Way. The lower inner rows of rocks are not just rubble but rather the remains of a second wave of building, by the Byzantines. These were mostly shops and market stalls. The street then became as narrow as eight meters. Previous Hierapolis

Excellent shot. It does give a great sense of being there from this perspective. It's quite amazing how old sophisticated plumbing goes back. Fountians and baths, and more I imagine. Great shot of a historical timeline.

This is a fabulous shot Roxy. It really does take you there - across space and time. They are evidently in the process of doing research to construct a 3D model of Hierapolis - not sure who exactly, but here is a link for you: http://spiedigitallibrary.org/proceedings/resource/2/psisdg/7110/1/711004_1?isAuthorized=no
