Description

Finally! Hello, and thanks for visiting, and for any comments you take the time to leave. Sorry it's been so long. I have a lot to show now, so I should be posting a lot more regularly. I realize I need to post the rest of the light study images, but I mentioned using point lights for candles and other lighting in a critique and thought I should post this example. Each of the candles has a point light with a 2% intensity and inverse square falloff right above the flame. The image also uses the P9+ version of my Essential Materials, which I should be submitting to the market any day now. They've been held up by more than a month of me fighting my computer. We're on much better terms now that I've reinstalled the OS a couple of times and gotten rid of a sound card that didn't agree with it. The P7+ version is already in the market. Essential Materials are a set of basic materials you can customize with images and other nodes to make a wide variety of shaders. This image uses Pearl (the jade statue and pearls), Marble (pedestal and candles), Metal (candlestick holder), Reflective (shoji frame and shoe soles), Velvet (chaise), Satin (dress), Leather (shoes), and Stone (backdrop). The reflective materials use the option of adding a reflection map to the raytraced reflections. Since I didn't feel like making a whole environment and I've had an oddly bad time with environment spheres, I just used an IBL and used its source as the reflection map to mimic the scene outside of the camera's view. I think it worked out pretty well. The only postwork is the frame and the hair, which was my third attempt. I'm still not entirely pleased with it. I'd usually tweak the rest of the image, but I figured it would be better to show the materials and light more accurately. I named this studio 01 because I plan to use this scene for tests and promo images. So you'll probably be seeing permutations of it in the future. I think I'll make my own draped furniture at some point because this one has nothing underneath. I'll probably want something I can show from other angles and can make respond dynamically to the figure. And just to say, I put this in pinups just because this is mostly about the woman looking sexy, though I realize this is a lot more tame than most Rendo pinups. I do still plan to make the light studies into freebies, and now I know the best way to do it. I use point at on my lights, and I wasn't sure how to distribute them without their usual targets (parts of the main figure). This scene uses primitives as targets that are invisible except in preview, where they show as wireframe. I figure that will work well. Also, they were made in P7, without IDL, so I'll update them to incorporate IDL and probably eliminate the IBL I had to compensate for its lack. There are some other details to iron out about them, but it shouldn't be too bad. Knock on wood :D. I think the candle material is especially wonderful--it has just the right translucency, and the satin on the dress and the jade statue are also very beautiful! You have a wonderful eye for how materials look. You also are sopisticated in how you use lights, which I have always been sort of a fail at;) I think this is a lovely image just as a render--it's very serene and luxurious at the same time!

This is a clear testament of the superb quality of your materials, KobaltKween. I totally agree with LaDonna: these are must-have materials. Most times when i look at gallery images I just look at them in the page... rarely to I bring up the larger version. This image totally warrants close inspection. Personally, I find the girl's pose more elegant than pinup, perhaps because of the scene she finds herself in: a classic themed setting. The draping is spectacular: are the sim settings his or did you fine-tune them? Some things naturally resonate, like the metal of the candle-holder and the wood edging and the rice paper of the Folding Screens. This is an elegant, thoughtful work. As are your materials! :D Side note: it is very thoughtful to give acknowledgement for freebies... I'm going to follow your example.

Candles look great, I like the scene... she looks a little stiff, I think if you played with the pose a little more to make her look more relaxed it'd sell.

Wow, fantastic materials. Are you using sss in the P 9/2012 version of the materials? If not, you emulated it well. I'm glad that you are willing to research and experiment so much to create shaders and lighting like these. Oddly I'm drawn to the screen and the specularity of the wooden material, and the light and shadows on the paper. It's just a satisfying effect.
