Description

Ten years ago, before the worldwide financial crash, the United Nations and the European Union were spending a lot of time and money helping Cambodia recover from its recent past. Schools for the handicapped were established to train people for useful trades. Much attention was paid to the ancient monuments with an eye toward attracting tourism. There was scaffolding and construction equipment all around Angkor Wat. The original plan for this building was to cut down the tree and remove its roots before restoring the building. After a review by structural engineers, however, it was discovered that the only thing holding up the building were the roots so it was decided to leave everything as it was. And so you have it.

What a fascinating tree and capture. I wonder how long it has been growing there. Wouldn't it be wonderful to see a time lapse of the tree going from seedling to giant. The combination of architecture and tree is magnificent. Beautiful image!

What a great shot and story! It looks like the tree is getting ready to just walk away from its arduous task!
