Description
More than a hundred years ago, Chicago was home to a great event: The World's Columbian Exposition of 1893, also known as the Chicago World's Fair.
The fairgrounds were spectacular. Beautiful, grand, electrified, massive buildings, all painted white and meant to impress. An engineering contest gave the world its first Ferris wheel. Landscaping and architecture were by the most famous designers of the era. In six month's time, 27 million people paid admission to enter what was known as the White City.
The City of Chicago itself, however, was a different story. Overcrowded, filty with soot and grime, riddled with disease, it was a dangerous place to live. The Union Stock Yards slaughtered more animals and processed more meat than anywhere else in the world. In contrast to the fairgrounds, Chicago itself was known at that time as the Black City.
Both the Black City and the White City are long gone, visible only in certain areas and only if you know where to look.
When we were in Chicago as September gave way to October, the sun was warm and the skies were clear, and when I walked toward the lake and turned around to view the city, it shimmered silver in the late morning light.

Chicago sure is dazzling! Love the twins on the left of the photograph. The one on the right seems to be the victim of the Einstein paradox: space travel got his jacket unbuttoned.

Beautiful capture of the wall in Millennium Park. I like the angle you took the picture from, it changes the whole view of Chicago.

The building to the right of the black one looks odd - almost as if it were computer generated, as does the one with the blue and white facade and gables, as though they were on Mount Olympus somehow. The "silver" wall looks like the plating on the bottom of the hull of an old time ship with overlapping plates and rivetted hull. The tall building is slightly convex while its lower neighbor is concave. This photo really captures a panoply of architectural styles and appeals to the imagination. Excellent job! Keep up the good work! :-)

Excellent capture and interesting information. Beautiful lighting and composition. I like the figures too, (especially the twins), and the single black building against all that silver. Have you read the nonfiction book "The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America" by Eric Lawson? It's about two men; Daniel H. Burnham, the architect who oversaw the fair's construction, and H.H. Holmes, a serial killer who was active during the same period and built a gruesome hotel near the fairgrounds for his purposes. It has a lot about Chicago at the time of the fair. I found it an interesting read.

An interesting looking skyline and you have caught them looking very silvery in this light. Those figures add a nice contrast too. Excellent capture.

What do you get, when you mix BLACK with WHITE ? = GREY, like the colour of ash - close enough to SILVER ;) one could say Chicago is rising from the ashes ... nice thought? to be known now as 'The Silver City' and home of the Silver Surfer, in my fantasy anyway ;) great perspective Tara, BB
