Description
This is BooBoo the baby beaver. As you can see, he is way too sweet. He is sleeping in my sons arms here. Yes, he is nursing on his finger. Baby beavers are never left alone. They are cared for by nannies when mom is away. They will, as I discovered, throw themselves on their side, kick and yell if they do not get their way.
Once again, here is that nasty word. They are considered "vermin" here and have no protection.
His mother was killed by a trap. Beaver traps are made by two large flat sides, heavy wire, that snap shut under water and drown the animal. One would think that as humans, we would be above killing anything like that, as it has to be not a nice way to die. I struggle everyday with this type of situation. Sometimes it gets to be too much. I then have to go to the happy releases to remember why I do this.

Aw, this is SO cute. Yet, I'm wondering about those chisel teeth. He probably understands not to use them on the finger. They "kick and yell"? Sounds like any human baby who tries to express a need which must be met NOW! I remember reading a condensed book in the Reader's Digest back in the 1960s about a man who raised a beaver from this age. It was a very moving story. The beaver gave him a good bye kiss, a nip in the neck which bled quite a bit, before heading off for the last time. I love your animal work, the photos and the small story with each photo. Living in an apartment, I don't even have place for a rat or mouse. So I have to appreciate the animals in the wild, or through posts like yours. Keep up the good work! :-)

Nice beaver.........

They are cute, and I have photographed lots of them, but never one quite this young. On the other hand, a family of them can destroy a large area of trees pretty quickly. Of course we notice that because we have already removed almost all the trees ourselves and we want the remaining ones to be there just for us. Where mankind has not already invaded, the beaver live in perfect harmony with their environment. This is a very nice shot!
