Description

From the Journal of Ronald Harrison, Historian: I look at images like this from the period before Humanity's First Interstellar War and I wonder how we ever got out here without going mad. The first explorers traveled in small cramped ships, landing on difficult worlds moons in even smaller craft with few rewards. Many of them said that the excitement of being the first humans to see or touch these places was a major force in keeping them going, but I find it difficult to believe that was enough. People are resilient, I know, but we're not meant to be closed in, and the idea of spending days or weeks in zero gravity in a tiny can makes my heart race and my eyes dart about almost beyond my ability to control. They were a unique breed to be sure, which may be why the war was ultimately pretty inconclusive, beyond opening space to a wider range of nations. I'm grateful to them for pathways they opened up, but I'd never want to be in their shoes. ----------------- I'll admit I'm not sure why I decided to go in this direction, but I was reading about the Jamestown colony so I'm sure that had a great deal to do with it. This ship was modeled entirely within Bryce 6.5, the textures are mostly presets, with a few of my own and a few altered presets as well. The planet and stars were done in Photoshop, as was compositing and other post-work. Thanks for taking a look, and as always comments, critiques and suggestions are very encouraged. Don't be afraid to offer criticism, I hope to keep improving and input from other people helps that along.

I tend to share the writer's feelings about being cramped up in such small spaces for so long. Love the model!

Excellent model and scene! So are there no green, wet worlds in your universe? They all look so barren and cold. That's enough to make me share Ronald Harrison's feelings.

It seems to me that the background stars are brighter than usual... Am I wrong? It gives this pic some kind of "such a wonder!" feeling, I really like it!
