Description

Hummocking, ice on the Ijsselmeer (lake) Hummocking, drifting of the ice on the IJssellake in the Netherlands. A process which really started when 4 days ago the frost had left the Netherlands. I’m not sure if Hummocking is the right expression, because it is a fresh water lake. The mountains of ice (approx 3 meters high) near the little town of Urk ( before it was surrounded by a polder, Urk was a little island in the Zuiderzee, which was turned in to a lake) with inhabitants which where remarkably tall) Photos taken today (16-02-2012) near the little town of Urk. The cyan blue colored heaps of ice is so fascinating to see, even if it is an overcastted day. Thanks for viewing, and your lovely words on my previous postings; comments are always welcome. Have a very nice day Henk From Wikipedia the following info: Urk is a municipality and a town in the Flevoland province in the central Netherlands. Urk is first mentioned in historical records dating to the 10th century, when it was still an island in the Almere, a lake that would become part of the Zuiderzee in the 13th century after a series of incursions by the North Sea. In 1939, a dike from the mainland to Urk ended the town's island status, just as the Afsluitdijk project was changing the salt water Zuiderzee surrounding Urk to the less saline IJsselmeer. Later in the 20th century, seabed areas surrounding Urk were reclaimed from the sea and became the Noordoostpolder. The mainstay of the town's economy has always been fishing, and the products of the sea coming in through Urk's harbor continue to be exported widely, although today Urk's fishing boats must travel greater distances to gather them than was required in most historical periods.
