Description
The Pier Head Liverpool is part of the 'Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City UNESCO World Heritage Site'. The site encompasses a trio of landmarks, built on the site of the former George's Dock and is referred to as 'The Three Graces'
Left to Right.... The Royal Liver Building, built between 1908 and 1911 and designed by Walter Aubrey Thomas. It is a Grade I listed building featuring two clock towers, both crowned by mythical 'Liver Birds'.Local's will tell you,the 'Liver Bird' which looks out on the river, is the Female watching for the safe arrival of ships. The one that looks over the City, is the Male, looking to see if the pubs are open.....
In the center stands 'The Cunard Building', built between 1914 and 1916.This was the former headquarters of the Cunard Line shipping company.
To the right stands 'The Port of Liverpool Building', built between 1903 and 1907.This was the former headquarters of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Company.
George's Dock was the third 'wet dock' built at Liverpool and it opened in 1771.By 1899 ships had outgrown the dock and it was filled in along with the George's basin, to create what is now the Pier Head, to provide one central location for Liverpool's dock offices. A section of the original George's Dock wall is still visible in the basement of the Cunard Building.

Beautiful panorama photo Neil. I see a small suggestion of a seam on the stairs up to the statue. I don't know how many photos you've stiched together for this - excellent work! Beautiful buildings! But rather disconcerting that they are built on land fill. I wonder what they are used for today. I see the time is 3:48 PM, so the pubs must be open! I won't keep you with more talk! Cheers! Keep up the good work! :-)

A stunning panorama and the buildings are indeed beautiful. So much detail when zoomed in. Buildings of such stlye just don't seem to be made these days. Sorry to drag the level of comment down but the very word LiverBirds always makes me think of a 1970s Nerys Hughes in those newsboy style hats. Great post Neil :)

I like old buildings. the craftsmanship is awesome.

Beautiful shot of the gorgeous historical architecture. Nice history as always. I am amazed that the dock was filled in like that without all our modern machinery and an army of heavy dump trucks hauling in the fillage.

Fantastic panorama that definitely needs a zoom to appreciate. I see the seam that T.Rex pointed out, but having never stitched together a panorama myself, I have no idea whether this is easily fixable or not...

As we say around the OK Corral, "Great shootin' pardner". This is great at the zoom level...sharp, clear and bursting with detail. My read on filling in the old dock in 1899...it would have been easy with railcars full of dirt and steam shovels.

Nice shot Neil and a great write-up to go with it.

Quite an impressive trio of buildings. Yep, they don't build them like that anymore!
