Description
2012 sees the 100th Anniversary of the loss of The Titanic. This is the first in a series of posts leading up to April 15th.Although Titanic never sailed to Liverpool, she was registered in Liverpool, and a large portion of her crew where from Liverpool. The Captain of the USS Californian, Stanley Lord, who failed to answer Titanic's distress calls despite being only four miles away, was born and raised in Wallasey, and his family still live in the same house.
This photo shows The Memorial to the Engine Room Heroes of the Titanic it is a granite monument located in St. Nicholas Place,Pier Head,Liverpool. The city of Liverpool is strongly associated with the ill-fated liner that sank on April 15,1912 after striking an iceberg in the North Atlantic with the loss of some 1517 lives. The RMS Titanic was owned by White Star Line which was founded in Liverpool in 1840.Liverpool was also the port of registry of the liner with the words'Titanic Liverpool' visible on the stern of the ship. The memorial on Liverpools waterfront is dedicated to the 244 engineers that lost their lives in the disaster as they remained on the ship supplying the stricken liner with electricity and other amenities for as long as possible. The monument is notable as the first monument in the United Kingdom to depict "The Working Man".The monument is 14.6m tall and was designed by Sir William Goscombe John.Constructed around 1916, it's dedication was broadened following WWI to include all maritime engine room fatalities.
During WWII a German aerial mine landed between the monument and the Liver Building, the Liver Building sustained serious damage, and the base of the monument was pock marked by shrapnel, still visible if you zoom the picture.
Did you know TWO R.M.S Titanics came out of Harland & Wolff at the same time? I am not refering to sister ships, I mean 2 Titanics...the second is in perfect condition and here in Liverpool....want to see a photo ?....watch this space..

I've always had a huge interest in the Titanic dating back to when I was a child and have many books and articles on the subject. That's fascinating that Stanley Lord's family still live in the same house. Have you ever met any of them? I've always though of the engineers as the unsung heros of that fateful night as they stayed at their posts keeping things running as long as possible and would pay the ultimate price. A truly remarkable monument and image. Thanks neil :)

there should be more recognition to the working class, for without which, the upper crust would all die. Hmmm, there's an idea. great lesson in history; 2 titanics? interesting.

Interesting, they have a monument to the engineers on the Titanic in Southampton as well. It has a iron statue of an Angel as the centre-piece.

The Titanic, hooks everyone doesn't it? No mate, I didn't know, and yes I AM now gripped and waiting for part two! lol Here is an idea? I have not noticed a model of said Titanic on here (or anywhere I go).. When you start again, do you think the Factory can handle such a thing? Or even, The Hood, or The Bismark, or...or or... But interesting and a fine post mate, well done once again.. Rob

Beautiful photo, though the background is odd. Thanks for the history. Now you've really piqued my curiosity - two Titanics? The one must be a large scale model of the ship, or....? As Rob says, IF you get the time, a 3D model? And an ice berg? And definitely the Hood. Personally, I'd like to see the HMS Queen Elizabeth battleship in her WWII configuration, and the HMS Warspite in its WWI configuration - both historical ships. There are no plastic models of there, either. Keep up the good work! :-)

Interesting. Titantic engine room too no doubt! I guess this monument was much preferable to the option of building a "Working Man's Paradise" ...as in Russia shortly afterwards.
