Description

This is a photo of an Airfix 1:600 scale plastic model of the WWI British battleship Iron Duke, probably best known for being Lord Jellico's flagship during the Battle of Jutland, 1916. It was named after Field Marshall Arthur Wellesley, 1st. Duke of Wellington. Some data: Launched 1912, commissioned 1914 Length 623 feet Weight 25,820 tonnes Speed 21 knots Range 4,840 NM @ 19 knots / 7,780 NM @ 10 knots Armament - Ten 13.5"/45 (343mm) guns in 5 twin turrets Twelve 6"/45 (152mm) guns single mount Two 2 3"/45 (76mm) guns single mount Four 4 21" (533mm)under water torpedo tubes Crew 1,000 men and officers History - 1914 - 1919 part of the Grand Fleet 1914 - 1916 flagship of the Grand Fleet 1919 - 1926 Mediterranean Fleet 1926 - 1929 Atlantic Fleet 1931 - disarmed and converted to gunnery ship due to naval restrictions treaty. 1939 - damaged by German air attack against Scapa Flow, grounded to avoid sinking. Refloated and used as an accommodations ship. 1946 - scrapped. Scrapped 1946 I originally bought the model to have as a bath tub "toy" as I don't have a rubber ducky, but as I started work on it, I got more and more engrossed in making "the perfect model" of it, so insted of being in the bath tub it's on the top of my living room book case! The thumb nail is also a photo of the model with a lot of Photoshop postwork to make it look like an old 1920s photograph. Enjoy! :)

I remember building the same model. Fine-looking ship for its day. Too bad she was scrapped, but WW2 probably did not leave much money available for preservation. The only British dreadnought to have served completely through both world wars.
