Description

ENCYCLOPEDIA GALACTICA Edition 428193 - Earth English Definition: 'Inuksuk' In origins an Earth Inuktitut1 word representing an ancient class of stone landmark constructed by the Arctic peoples native to Earth North America.2 Consisting of human assembled unworked stone, they function as a navigational and communications aid within a sparse, rugged environment which presents few discernible guides.3 The plural form is inuksuit. The term is now applied to landmarks created by nomadic intelligences for the long term guidance of their memberships. Civilizations or cultures within civilizations may be either predisposed to nomadic life or adapt to it as the consequence of some key historical event such as an Eden Crisis.4 Regardless of circumstance, all leave some marker of their presence to aid others of their kind towards suitable habitats in which to dwell. The largest nomadic society in the Milky Way was Civilization Lacerta. Members of Lacerta are an amphibiod species who migrated out of galaxy NGC 31095 in the constellation of Hydra 821 million years ago.6,7 They dwelt in the Scutum-Centaurus spiral arm for 209 generations of their species, colonizing nine (9) suitable planets.8 During this period, they are known to have created 452 inuksuit within the neighbouring star systems as well as on their colonies. A Lacertan inuksuk is a ring of 10501 equidistant towers aligned along a colony's equator and that of other selected bodies. A pattern that is not interrupted when supportive terrain subtends. Nor are the towers displaced by tectonic shifts, each enabled to move retaining equatorial alignment to within 0.3mm. Physically, such towers are comprised of a cylindrical shaft 10.1m in diameter and 1.67km in height. The shaft is composed of molecularly programmed silicates that maintain a transmitive nanotube substructure for strength, regeneration and, by extension, mobility. Nutrient materials are drawn from the surrounding landscape. An 11.9m diameter sphere of weak entangled energized diamond crowns the shaft.9 Depending upon the size of the host planet, tower separation varies between 3.6km to 4.3km. Because of their self renewing properties only twenty-six (26) of these towers are known to have failed or collapsed over time. For the exception of their own colonies, Lacertan inuksuit were not grown on planets possessing biospheres. Such a practice is considered unethical to their membership.10 Hence sites were established on lifeless bodies around stars ranging up to fifty-seven (57) light years from a colony. However, in the case of planet EGO 0327-03005077202, though frozen when its inuksuk was planted, its central star (EGO 0327-00001048201) later evolved into a red super-giant. The consequent warming process permitted the evolution of a native biosphere which now co-exists with the inuksuk. Anthropologists have remarked that the towers have a vague though distorted resemblance to the biological form of Lacertan members. A tall slender body with spheroidal heads bearing reflective (or shining) bluish-white eyes. Because of this resemblance some experts prefer to describe Lacertan tower sites as inunnguaq, a special class of inuksuk landmarks. Earlier today, I saw that you had uploaded another Encyclopedia Galactica entry, and I looked forward to when I could sit down with a cup of tea and dive in. You didn't disappoint. Interesting narrative and beautiful image! I like the beginning, where the origin of the word, and the addition to its use are described. The towers are fascinating with their ability to shift a certain amount to keep their function. As I was reading it, I was thinking about driving through the areas around San Antonio, and seeing evidence of different peoples who settled here. Of course, the Civilization Lacerta were not settling and chose uninhabited planets, but how interesting it would be to be in the neighborhood and be told that on planet such and such there was Lacerta inuksuit. If you could get down there, (survive the elements) and take pictures, that would be a "photo exhibition of my vacation" to be proud of. That's one of the things I love about your Encyclopedia Galactica series. As I read them, I feel like I am in this world, and granted, with the vase distances and inhospitable worlds, I can't get to most of the places described, but still they are out there, as I read about them. Wonderful image! Beautiful colors, light, and textures. I like the texture of the nearest tower and the thin line of reflecting light on its edge. Nice purple glow on the vegetation, giving it a very alien look. Perhaps not hospitable to human tourists. Excellent work!
