Description

Inside the mail room car. This train was a great Urbex opportunity. Don't really know the history here but glad I spotted it... Have a great day! Ray Rico Photography Portfolio

Brought to mind the Dylan song It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry ("Well, I ride on a mail train, baby, can't buy a thrill"). Always assumed mail trains just carried sacks of mail that had already been sorted, but judging by those rows of cubby holes, it looks like at least some of the mail was actually sorted in the mail room car. While it was moving? Great light & atmosphere in this shot...

Where did you find this train? Just sitting derelict somewhere? My understanding of the mail operation...sacks of mail were sorted enroute making excellent use of time available. Today with bar codes and machines and airplanes...this type of operation is long gone...but thrived for at least 100 years. Neat photo full of interest.

This is a very interesting series. There is a site of the National Postal Museum with this picture: http://www.postalmuseum.si.edu/exhibits/2c1a_4_insiderms.html It's interesting to see what this train would have looked like when it was in use. There are several interesting articles on the site including one on how they used a crane to snatch the mail off the platform while a postman in the train kicked mail that was being delivered onto the platform so the train didn't have to stop. Superb capture! Wonderful lighting, clarity, and depth. It's fascinating to see all the many details and the decay caused by time and neglect. Excellent work.
