Description

Wednesday, March 7, 2012-03-07 Several of you have asked for more ship model photos, so here comes another photo. This is a change from tragic to a “happy” story. This is another Matchbox model in 1:700 scale, the HMS Ariadne, an Abdiel class mine layer. I assembled it in 1980. She survived WWII and was scrapped in June 1965. She first served off the coast of Norway. Thereafter she was transferred to the Pacific in January 1944 to serve with US forces. After the war, she repatriated British POWs from Japan due to her high speed. Model length – 18.2 cm. About the Abdiel class mine layers and the HMS Ariadne – Built October 1941 – 1943 Commissioned February 12, 1944 Length – 418 feet Beam – 40 feet Draught – 16 feet Weight – 2,650 tons standard, 4,000 tons full Power – 72,000 horse power Shafts – 2 Speed – 40 knots (what a fast one!) Complement – 242 officers and men Armament – Four 4 inch anti-aircraft guns (2x2 mounts) Four Bofors 40 mm. (2x2 mounts) Twelve 20 mm. Oerlicon anti-aircraft guns 160 mines Enjoy! And thanks for the comments!

That´s a nice ship. How large is this? It looks very small. But it has much details. Well done!

'Ariadne'...I know there's a connection with spiders in there somewhere, so this 'happy' ship laying a web of mines seems appropriate'... Bath time must be fun in your house, we'll have to start calling you Admiral T-Rex... LoL!! :-)

Nice one... And look how long it was kept in service! Now look how long they are now! Do you think we are somehow building crap rather than a good strong adaptable ship? I DO! Thanks once more mate! And yes! It has happened.. I have actually brushed of the brushes.. lol About to select my first kit in years! Wish me luck..More? Rob
