Description

Thursday, March 8, 2012 More! So here’s another famous Royal Navy ship! Since Rob has taken out his paint brushes and dusted them off, I thought he might enjoy this (unpainted) one! This is a Matchbox 1:700 model of the HMS Exeter. Assembled in November 1978, this was my first model purchase after my arrival in Lund. I had very little money, so, NO painting! Model length – 25 cm. About the HMS Exeter - Built – August 1928 – July 1929 Commissioned – July 1931 Length – 575 feet Beam – 58 feet Draught – 17 feet Weight – 8,390 tonns (10,410 full) Power – 80,000 horse power Shafts – 4 Speed – 32.5 knots Range - 10,000 nautical miles @ 14 knots Complement – 630 officers and crew Armament – Six 8 inch L/50 guns (2x3) Eight 4 inch single mounts Eight 2 pounders L/39 Two 20 mm. Oerlicon guns Two triple mount 21 inch torpedo tubes Armour – 3 inches main belt 1 ¼ to 1 ½ inches over machinery 5 to 1 inches over magasines Turrets – 1 inch front, rear (this is rather thin) 1 inch in barbette (this is rather thin) 2 ¼ inch in base December 13, 1939 – engaged the pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee, leading to its self-destruction. Severely damaged, HMS Exeter was repaired in England February 1940 – March 1941. December 1941 she was sent to the far east. February 27, 1942 she was damaged in the battle of the Java Sea. Attempting to reach port, she was attacked by a superior Japanese naval force on March 1, 1942. Badly damaged, she was scuttled. Concerning the thumb nail – I’ve again tried to emulate an old black/white photo (for better or worse). Thanks for all the comments folks! Much appreciated! Enjoy!

Excellent Michael, a touch of the Neiwils to accompany the illustration and that can't be a bad thing! Where did you come from before then and how did you end up in Lund?

Great model and write up. As Andrew points out, like the small plane.

A lot of nice detail, love the 'Walrus', that would have been 'fun' to paint.... A ship with an amazing history..She was involved in the Atlantic Fleet Mutiny in 1931.On a ports to ports tour in 1932, she put in at Liverpool in June 32. On May 26th 1941 she was left as the sole escort for a convoy when the other destroyers were detached to hunt for Bismark. On her sinking....she was sunk by Japanese torpedoes after being abandoned.(most crews reported scuttling their ship after abandoning).54 of her crew were killed during the engagement with the Japanese cruisers HAGURO and NACHI escorted by four destroyers,651 of her crew were rescued and made POW by the Japanese.( wonderful but weird how a picture can raise long forgotten memories...) Great post.....any more??

Not so lightly armored considering when she was built. Nice little historical squib.

This was a real fighting ship, always sent into the heaviest of the action against the biggest of foes.. Fast and heavily armed and armoured for a Cruiser, as Neil has spotted, she had the advantage of carrying an aircraft.. A very famous ship indeed.. (See the film: The Battle Of The River Plate!) Thanks for this mate.. I'm loving these memories and I DID make this one!!!! lol Yes! The brushes are out, the kit is selected, I'm not saying, IF its any good I'll do as you have and post a shot! lol Keep these up.. Aircraft maybe next? Rob
