Description
Some of you may have noticed that I'm not very good at identifying animal or plant species. On a few occasions, I've posted photos with incorrect identifications & I've been quickly corrected. So I was originally going to give this photo the title "Little Pink Bird". But I checked my Birds of Oregon book & did a Google image search & I'm reasonably sure that this is a house finch. If I'm wrong, I'm sure I will hear about it very soon...
On a more philosophical note, naming things, while definitely useful, is a way of abstracting & objectifying from what is known in eastern thought as the "suchness" of things. In naming a bird or a tree, you are, in effect, putting it into a mental box that puts limits on it & that diminishes the totality of what it is & how it exists in relation to everything else around it.
"When appearances and names are put away and all discrimination ceases, that which remains is the true and essential nature of things..."

I hear you on the naming of stuff, I am always quite wary of getting it wrong, so I wade through pages of internet searches to narrow it down, I full understand you opinion of that, beautiful little bird of which i am not familiar.

definitely a house finch as I know them. I watch them every year breed, build nests and raise young in the trees outside my office. They are really lovely. so is this capture of this one. nice POV and compo.

Excellent composition, detail and philosophical thoughts. I like combining these things when I know enough to do so;-) I am ok with North American birds, but plants, flowers, shrubs and trees (except the most common) give me fits.
