Description

First of a series of five I will be posting from a guided tour of the murals of the Mission district of San Francisco that I took in 2010. Though I lived in the SF bay area for over 30 years & certainly had seen some of the murals in this area, this free tour was very interesting & I highly recommend it for both natives & visitors. I find photographing murals a challenge. How do you present them in the best way? Sometimes, because of the layout of the street, it's not possible to get the whole of the mural or to get a direct straight on shot. So what angle do you shoot it from & where do you crop it? There may be parked cars, pedestrians or other distractions in the way. Sometimes you can incorporate those into the shot to make it more interesting, sometimes they just ruin it. I ended up taking many dozens of photos on the day these were taken & these five were the ones I thought were worth sharing - hope you enjoy this short photographic tour of the fine public art of the Mission...

Costa and I recently did this alley and several other areas there, photographing murals and parts of murals. I remember this one and have a shot I did - a bit different. I'll be interested in seeing how you saw them and your presentation. I don't think there are many murals in this district that I didn't photograph. Nicely done.

Great idea for a series. This mural is beautifully presented. I lived two years in San Francisco in the early 70's and never made it into the Mission District. I have just googled to be sure I knew where it is...even though I've heard of it for years. Looking forward to more.

I am always interested - not only in murals - but also very creative Graffiti, I mean they can all be good, so where do you draw the line? It's all in the eyes of the beholder - having said that, it's a great start, I love the DOF on this garage door(?),looking forward to more, BB PS thank you so very much for the good wishes for my 'EYE OP' - apart from having felt very anxious prior to it and than feeling really sick after the anesthesia - I am getting better now - looking as good as Captain Sparrow of 'The Pirates of the Caribbean' ... hmm!
