Description

...took the photo above in the original Boeing Airplane factory (called the Red Barn). Scene is vinatge 1916-17. ...William E. Boeing made his money originally in the lumber business in the Pacific Northwest. He then purchased a wooden boat company in Seattle and took his knowledge of wooden structures (and his skilled carpenters) into the new field of building airplanes. ...in Boeing's early years of 1915-1925, spruce wood was used for its flexability and strength and there was what appeared to be a never ending supply of it in the state of Washington. A wonderful shot of this light and airy workshop Bill and a bit of history to boot. I wonder why spruce, shouldn't it have been the plane tree?????

Ah, the birth place of a great aitcraft industry. Thanks for the information and the photo! This photo says it all, except missing wood shavings on the floor. Interesting lighting, as it really was. I've just looked and looked at this. I can just feel the atmosphere of the place in this image. I assume the man in the distance is real and not a figure. Interesting engine on the saw horses. Would be nice to visit this place sometime. Keep up the good work! :-)

I would think there's a great smell in there; or at least there used to be, when it was being used. Wonderful atmosphere, and I love the light!

Cool picture Bill... Like it.. It so much looks like carpentry doesn't it? Rather than Aircraft Construction, its only when you look closer and see wires etc you realise! Great shot.. Well done Rob

You can practically smell the wood! - which can only be recognised and appreciated by your fine arrangement and presentation in photography, thus makes it a clear winner ... BB PS thank you Bill, so very much for the good wishes for my 'EYE OP' (Cataract)- apart from having felt very anxious prior to it and than feeling really sick after the anesthesia - I am getting better now - looking as good as Captain Sparrow of 'The Pirates of the Caribbean' ... hmm!
