Description
I took this one from inside the bottom floor of my house, behind a sliding glass door, stretched out flat on my stomach, in order to get at eye level with this bluejay.
We have a bird feeder on the main level of our house that extends from a deck post on a pole. Lots of different birds constantly land on the feeder, stay to grab a bite & then fly off. But the bluejays have a more interesting technique. They shovel large clumps of bird seed with their beaks onto the lawn, which is about 15 feet below the feeder. A single bluejay will often stay there for several minutes doing this. That way their friends can dine comfortably on the grass, in large numbers. Other species of birds join in also, of course, as well as the occasional squirrel, but there's plenty to go around for everyone & they don't seem to mind the company.
This is a little bit of an inconvenience for us, as the bird feeder gets emptied much more quickly than it would otherwise & we have to refill it more often, but I have to admire the ingenuity of the bluejays. For creatures with such tiny brains, they're pretty smart...

This is a lovely capture. I was fortunate enough to see some of these birds on my trip last May.

He is a smart fellow and I guess he prefers to eat on the ground. A superb capture showing all his intelligent details. I have been feeding our birds for a month now as we have had such a wet summer so the birds are loving it.
