Description

Monday, March 26, 2012 USS Reid (FFG 30) This is the last photograph in the series of the USS Reid. The photo is taken looking towards the ships sharply raked bow. I had to use a 28 mm. wide angle zoom in order to get the whole ship into the photo. This photo shows details of the hull construction. The vertical lines show where each frame is located. The longitudinal lines show where the braces running from frame to frame are located. The hull plates are welded onto the frames and braces. The hull plates are at most ½ inch thick, the shape and stability of the construction lying in the short distances between frames and braces. Horizontal and longitudinal girders brace the ship internally. The deck plates are welded to the upper surfaces of these, futher adding strength and stability. However, pressure from rough seas can press hull plates inwards, revealing the frame and brace system, as is readily visible in this photo. I have other photos of other ships. I’ll post these as I have time. Enjoy!

That's one razor sharp looking edge and it also looks very mean at that angle. Nice work!

Cool shot of the very! 'pointy end' (bet you're surprised I know the technical term),thanks for a great series, excellent info,(plus the 'bonus blueprints')This has been very enjoyable both from a 'hardware' point of view and also getting reaquainted with 'The Village People'.My final observation has to be the surprising lack of little round window things..(more techno-speak :-) What next?

Another cool shot mate! It is a very sharp bow, gives the impression of vast 'sea' speed.. But oddly the Somerset, which has not got as sharper bow is at least 4 knots faster (more I think).. Still, It's all about what they are made for, U.K. ships are made to serve world wide at moments notice.. As you saw they are gun armed (Falkland experience that). This is not.. Missiles are useless at close range, guns make BIG HOLES! But I am itching to see more of these ships.. More more upcoming mate! Rob

I should know these things coming from a long line of Navy men going back to John Paul Jones. Being the only son of an only son I broke the tradition. I remember going on base and always being saluted, and my grandmother telling me they were saluting the car, which I thought was dumb at the time. This ship looks like the corvette (Car) of ships. Very sleek looking. Kind of like a sexy woman. picture is in forcus so I say good job. Song I heard on viewing, I do hear songs when I view stuff hear. ya I am a little mental being bipolar and I do not care who knows. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acnt3r6z5ns skip ad
