USCGC Mellon (WHEC-717)
Here’s another interesting ship I photographed shortly after the USS Reid, 1991. This is the US Coast Guard Cutter Mellon, classified as a hight endurance cutter, based in Seattle. This ship has the honor of being “the first” in many respects. It is the first ship to receive a “joy stick” helm.
This is the first and only Coast Guard ship armed with the Harpoon anti-ship missile system and armed for anti-submarine warfare. These systems were later removed during the 1990s due to fiscal restraints. On my photo, the following weapons systems are clearly visible.
From right to left we see –
Oto Melara 76 mm. gun
Two gray triple tube Harpoon missile launchers (being aimed across the ship, the launch blast goes into the water)
Triple tube Mark 32 torpedo tubes (gray) to left of the ship’s boat
Funnel with expandable helecopter hangar to cover the 80 foot flight deck
Phalanx CIWS close in defence gun
This ship, when armed with the Harpoon and anti-submarine torpedoes was just as heavily armed as the Perry Class fast frigates! See my previous post at –

Now this is coolly interesting! I like it.. I have always loved the bright Coast Guard colours, unlike our Fisheries and coastal ships (Grey!) lol Good to see this is gun armed but the Frigate not.. Mmmmm? But I love this, Great information as well... Range 10,000 miles (good!) but only 45 days endurance so I am guessing they were restocked at sea!Otherwise they would be going very fast to do that in 45 days! lol Only kidding! Did you get more of this, it looks kind of 'of bounds'? Rob

Very interesting. A fine looking vessel mate.

Hm... do the Perry-Class frigates and this ship have the same body? It looks a bit like a low-fat-perry. I like your pictures of ships, because a long (?) time ago, I have been very interested in such things.

fantastic shot! my son serves in the US Coast Guard and I remember him telling something about this ship and other cutters coming out with increased capabilities and firepower.

Thanks Michael. I've just learned more about our own Coast Guard that I didn't know. You've inspired me to look the ship up online...lots of good info.

Ok, thats one serious "coast guard"- seems it could outshoot the Navies of some small nations!
