Description

Mount Rainier as seen from the Magnolia district in Seattle, Washington. There are many mountains in North America that are taller than Mount Rainier, but it's the most topographically prominent mountain in the contiguous United States. Here's what that means: In Colorado there are several mountain peaks that are over 14,000 feet. The surrounding terrain is at about 5,000 feet, so the mountains stick up about 9,000 feet. The peaks are really high, but they don't look as tall as they are. Mount Rainier has a topographic prominence of 13,210 feet. It basically rises from sea level, so it looks every bit as tall as it is. On the North American continent, only Denali in Alaska and Logan in the Yukon have a higher topographic prominence, but there are 28 peaks that are taller than Rainier. Make sense? :) That's all by way of telling you this isn't a photo manipulation. It's just a picture of Mount Rainier with Seattle's Harbor Island in the foreground. I took it from Magnolia on full zoom. Single image. No funny business.

Super shot and info Tara. The best we can do in our area is our shore line cliffs which are less than a 1000 feet and sometimes resemble mountains!

I know exactly what it's prominence means; I've seen it many times and it stands out and immedaitely applies magnetic control to your eyeballs!

Very nice shot - it's a beautiful mountain & does look like a behemoth here. A couple of hours south from where I live we have Mt. Shasta, which at 14,180 is a little shorter than Rainier, but which dominates the landscape for a long distance & which I would guess has a pretty high topographic prominence (a term I hadn't heard before, so thanks for educating me)...

Wonderful capture of this awesome peak!!!! I know what You mean, the verticle rise from the base is much greater than the mountains here in Colorado.

I always preferred 14,410... somehow it SEEMS to be a more memorable figure than 14,411... which looks like a typo to me. What I remember most about that height is that the commuter flights usually crossed the range at 10,000 from sea level (Tahoma at 14K+ and Adams at 12K+... hmmm. How big of an oil blot would this puddlehopper make?); the view out the cockpit was all white (clouds / fog), the "speed bump" over Untanum (SP?) ridge, and the invisible runway in Yakima... at least during the winter months. Tahoma is indeed a wonderful sight and a wonderful site. I must tell you the story, some day, about how some of our ferrets conquered a glacier while we were visiting the park... Some animals you just can't take anywhere! (Use your imagination.) HAGO and thanks.

I'm always amazed at how big this mountain seems, and how it can change in size so much from one location to the next; looking huge as you top a hill, then seeming to shrink as you go a little down the road, to being nearly invisible a little further. I think it holds its breath when it knows we're looking to make itself look bigger ;P Awe-inspiring shot here, as it looms over the city. Well done!

Yep, that's a pretty big chunk of rock you have there! A most spectacular photo, Tara! The compression from the zoom really gives a good idea of how massive this mountain is! And the explanation makes perfect sense. Super post, my dear friend!

Awesome. The scale gives me shivers. I've seen it myself and have been to Colorado once. I know of what you speak when you compare altitude to vertical drop. This is quite impressive. The grayness adds mystery.
