Description
Well, worked on the Nike again this weekend. I went through and reviewed the images of the work I'd done. first I compared it to the actual wing of the statue.
1) It has simailarities but it was primarily inaccurate. It did not match.
2) The NIke statue's wings are not really true avian wing designs. The Nike wing seems to have some features of a doves wings and some features of an owl's wings.
So I compared my sculpt to an actual avian wing structure. It has simailarities but it was quite flawed. It looked more like a crumpled owl's wing
Now I had to decide where to go from here. Do I make it accurate to the statue ir accurate to a true avian wing? I decided to make it look more like a true avian wing.
After about two hours of cleanup adjustment and rework I came up with this. There's lots still to do but I'm much happier with it

Hmmmm.... I like the 'pointy' wing style in the second tier of images between the two wing-styles. I guess it depends on if you're going for a more or less exact copy of the original or your own version of it. To my knowledge, the sculptures of antiquity were more 'symbolic' than anything - the idea of perfection in the artist's millieu and culture. Nike's body and dress look really great! Nice work.

It's fascinating watching this model build up, bit by bit. Such a different approach to modelling than subdivision and nurbs.

Here is my line of thought; The original sculpture is very old and weathered, not to mention it is very difficult to sculp real looking wings in stone (too heavy of a medium for such thin and delicate work). The advantage of cg is the ability to incorperate anything you desire. Why you could even give her a glowing aura if you desired, or for that matter you could change the structure from stone to magma or gemstone. The whole point is a digital reproduction is something for a historian to do and get paid for doing so. As far as doing it for the art of it...go with what you feel is right to you. By the way I think you made the right choice, she is beautiful!

Agreed with Xanthmann, but I think Seans ultimate goal is something he can render as an hellenistic statue, the more realistically doone the better. Am I right ?
