Description
This McDonnell RF-101C Voodoo, tail number AF 56-0112, along with a second RF-101 Voodoo, tail number AF 56-0130, are on static display at the Gila Bend Municipal Airport, a public use airport, located two nautical miles East of the CBD Gila Bend, Maricopa County, Arizona.
I first became aware of the RF-101s during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. When images taken by a U-2 were analyzed, it was realized that the Soviets had begun to bring missiles to Cuba. Watching the build up and subsequent withdrawal of the missiles was monitored by reconnaissance flights of RF-101 Voodoos out of Homestead AFB, Southern Florida.
In summer 1964, while stationed at Paine Field, Washington, the Canadians out of Comox AB, Vancouver Island, British Columbia flew CF-101s out of Paine Field for two months, while their runways where being re-surfaced. The F-102s at Paine Field, along with the F-106s at McChord AFB south of Seattle, were part of the United States Air Force Air Defence Command (ADC). The Canadian CF-101s at Comox AB, Vancouver Island fullfilled the same function - air defence under NORAD.
Normally the Canadians were flying at night while the F-102s flew in daytime, but occasionally they had a Deuce fly with a Voodoo. While the Deuce reported climbing through 15,000-ft the Voodoo reported leveling off at 30,00-ft. Both aircraft had J-57 engines, except the Voodoo had two.
Watching the Voodoos take off at night from directly behind them always amazed me. When they lit the single stage afterburner, often one at the time, it always rotated the airframe slightly, since the engines are slightly off-centered. Great show.
While on TDY (temporary duty) at Udon RTAB, Thailand in 1966-67, RF-101s were flying day time reconnaissance while RF-4s flew night time reconnaissance.

I just did a little homework on the Voodoo...what a great and very versatile aircraft for the 1950s-60s. It is fun finding these birds sitting around all these years later isn't it? Well done.

A good tail end veiw and interesting facts about this aircraft.Abouyhe only large planes that I know anything about are the old B-52's that I would see taking off and landing at Westover,in Chicopee,Mass.They were loud.
