Description

This was a sketch (no more) of one of the greatest pieces of design of the 20th Century: Frank Lloyd Wright's "Robie House" in Chicago. I went to graduate school 2 blocks from this beauty (University of Chicago) and there wasn't a day when I didn't pass this breathtaking structure & didn't marvel at how complex, sweeping & ever-modern it was. (It's from 1909.) I made this for Koosie, but this was the earlier version & was too small for a gift, but I still send him a big hug as I post it... I've probably said before that I started out doing architectural rendering---"rendering" in the original sense meaning "making a drawing look realistic". Well, I did many realistic drawings over several years, so as an antidote, I'd sit and sketch instead---an improvisation, a quick 'bow', like a song. That's what this was, nothing more. Still, it's my little valentine to FLWright...
Am commenting still (and loving it) I wish you all a fine Tuesday! Mark (ps, if you see pics of this house, just remember: You have to see it from all angles because it's the whole that makes the place such a joy)

Hi Mark... I live in Jefferson Wisconsin...a small Midwestern town that has several of these houses of various designs...About an hour North of me is a town called Spring Green and is where the House on the Rock is located and I'm guessing that you know this already since your creating sketches of this architectural designer....but just in case your not here's a link.... http://houseontherock.com/ Awesome Sketching by the way!....(smiles)...

Now this is something special Mark, and it really did brighten my day. I've only had the pleasure of seeing his house in photos and never seen a sketch like your's before. Knowing that you passed by this every day while going to graduate school makes it all the more special as it allows us to see it through your eyes. The detailing here is delicate and your attempt to make it realistic was right on the mark. Fantastic work my friend, and as always it was made complete when you shared your thoughts behind the image.

His work never ceases to amaze me. It's simple, yet nearly majestic. Didn't we see one of his houses as we walked in Chicago?

AAHH! One of your AMAZING drawings, Mark. What a beautiful piece of art. Frank Lloyd Wright's style can not be denied. Nor can yours. I would recognize your lovely drawings on a foggy night with sunglasses on ;-) Love it.

Great Scott....1909? Light years of brilliance and simplicity before the rest of the mundane structures of that time. Terrific POV and "minimalist" pen and ink-like sketching in this fine work of art, Mark! And thank you for the wonderful comments in re my contributions to Renderosity.

A very beautiful sketch of this interesting building. Your work is so detailed that it is a joy to see. This architect was really well ahead of his time with the lovely lines he uses for this house. Very well done and a lovely gift for Koosie.

I have commented on this image twice, but each time I've been called away by itunes issues, and ended up shutting down the computer without remembering to hit "submit" on the comment first. Can I remember what I said? Probably not. I do remember saying, "Don't you just love Helle?" She's right, of course. This looks like you. The way you do crosshatching, perhaps, or the obvious love for the subject that comes through in every line, or the balance of light and dark. Something about the way you work is uniquely you, and it's a joy to see. A wonderful drawing of a fabulous house. (Sketch? If I had done something this fine, you'd never hear the end of it!)

Dang, but you're good. This has the expressiveness of the greatest cartoonists (and that is not mean as a joke) - such depth of feeling and information content in a deceptively simple series of lines. And of course, your trademark light and shade, so powerfully conveyed. Superb!

Wright is one of my few top favorites among architects, Mark. I am sure Koosie will see and love it, like me. I guess he will write his "very fine drawing".
