Description

Space, for me - from south rim of Grande Canyon, a storm blowing in from the north had just touched the far rim. You can see it dipping into the hanging valley to the right. The desert was about to be hit by rain. Do these places in part touch us because they contain hidden metaphors? The oldest deposits are at the bottom, the youngest at the top. Yet the river that cuts through them works her way from top to bottom - so the oldest "exposure" is actually at the top and the youngest at the bottom. It is completely natural, in total harmony, and yet what we see is the result of the earth's processes working in perfectly opposite directions. Does not such splendor say something about light needing dark to be seen? Or that shadows are not shadows without light to define them? Look at the light and dark on this landscape and think... would it be half as interesting totally lit or totally dark? What does that say about our love of tribalism? The demand for conformity. It is so comforting to go with us vs them; and the less of them the better for us! But would we be us without them? Space - for me - indeed.

Even as 'grand' as it looks here, images never do tell just how incredibly huge the canyon is. Nonetheless, this is an excellent vantage Roxy and gives about as much sense of scale as one can when shooting from the rim. I think it's great ancient age and the miracle of it has some to do with it's 'holiness' but what you've said here is so very true as well. We have been taught to 'take sides' but in reality it's all part of the Same Thing. We would never be able to fully appreciate one 'side' without the knowledge of the other 'side'.

A beautiful shot, Roxy, and I love your philosophy - very thoughtfully put together, and how true! I've been to the Grand Canyon once - I long to go again.... This place boggles the mind; there's just no way to understand its scale without experiencing it in person.

Balance is the key. Nature surrounds us with answers that a few know and keep many in ignorance and too many just ignore. Somewhere in between lie those who understand and strive against the conformity to find the balance. The more afar things go the harder we have to work to keep things from spriling off forever. Ironically another diffulcult ballet. If more thought like your words, things woudld improve. Beautiful shot too. I'm happy to say I've made it there at least once. Thanks for sharing.

It is difficult to express the thoughts that one processes when this is before you, but you've done very well with your thoughts I think. They are interesting points. Great shot too by the way! I really, really need to go back soon!

I wonder what Càrdenas thought when he as first European saw Grand Canyon? Sigh. Adventure and discovery!, they didn't have to sit on their behinds before the computer all day... :(

A stunning shot, the lighting so deep before the storm... love this one. And some deep thoghts too. The greatest beauty is for me in the free flow of natural forces. They are beyond us but also in and around us if we just stop to look at them.
