Description

It had been a cold gritty day. The previous night, me and my mate Frank had imbibed the pleasures of drinking microbrewed beer on Fisherman's Warf in San Francisco Harbour. Yea it had been a tourist trap for sure but the beer was good and so we didn't mind. Didn't mind pretending we were a normal couple... well, whatever normal was. Frankly, no pun intended, I don't think we fooled too many people. We stank of campfire smoke and dressed like we had just been in the woods for a week, which we had. But the beer was good, and so I don't think anybody else really minded either. Asides, it was San Francisco, we were the least of the freaks. As I said, the day had been a cold and gritty one. As soon as we started gaining elevation we hit the north California spring rains. Weren't really expecting it - just too dumb back then I guess. Oh well, it was a long drive up the Sierra Nevada's and we weren't seeing to much of the country that we had driven so far to see. My beaten up old Toyota truck that I paid $10.00 for was barely making the grade. We were both in kinda foul moods, the only thing that kept our tempers down was the steady cans of Coors and the occasional bit of dope.... yea those were the bad old days, the wild days, not all my friends got out alive. I helped bury a few of them - well, spread their ashes in sacred sites is what we did. My friends and I didn't bury our dead, we let them blow free in the wind, just like they did in life. Anyways, we finally got to Lake Tahoe and the God's that be rewarded us with a purple haze sunset to celebrate our efforts. While Frank set up camp and drove off looking for a beer store I grabbed my old Canon Rebel and set out scrambling on the old rocks. The light coming off those ancient granites was out of this world, as you can see. And I was feeling them. I'm glad I was carrying a camera in those days and had the good sense to still use it even in the drug fueled haze we lived in at the time. Somebody was looking out for me then, making sure I captured the images that would have otherwise long faded from my brain. I'm clean now, have been for a long time, but those days give me a different perspective on life than so many of my professional colleagues. I lived hard and I don't regret a moment. I got to see some great Tahoe Twilights in my time. Previous Road Trip work

This is a fantastic photo Roxy, made even more so after reading the story behind it. Nothing brings a photo to life better than seeing it through the eyes of the person who was there, and having them share that experience and such an eloquent manner as you did here. Simply awe-inspiring work on what is a powerful moment in your life forever preserved in this photo.

I love this Roxy, the colors and misty feeling are absolutely beautiful. That must have been quite a trip - in many ways. The western US is a showcase of mother-nature and it's histories, and you have caught them so perfectly several times. Thanks for sharing this and some of you :)

I don't think it's possible to get a bad shot of Tahoe. You were well rewarded for you efforts. I'm not far from there at the moment actually, at Donner Lake in Truckee. Not as huge, but beautiful in its own way.

Beautiful shot - thank you for sharing a little of the story behind it, too. I can imagine you there with the beers, the truck that is barely holding together. Sounds like a very free, interesting time, Roxy!
