Hi Krittermom;
I promised to show you a bulb release for camera shutters. Here is mine.
It works using compressed air. Squeezing the bulb causes the pin in the plunger part to depress the shutter release. The plunger part is screwed onto the shutter release. This allows you to sit perfectly still, hold the bulb in your hand and QUICKLY squeeze when you see fit (there may be a 1/2 second time lapse before the shutter is released, which is why a QUICK squeeze is best). There is NO potential pull on the camera as can happen (due to hand movement) when using a cable release. The rubber tube is some 18 feet long, allowing you to sit some distance from the camera. These bulb releases are made so the photographer can be in the photo (like, family reunions, etc... which is why I bought this in 1981). They are not expensive from what I recall.
Good luck!

An excellent and informative post Michael, interesting to read about this type of thing now that everything is so different in the digital age. These things are durable aren't they (as long as the rubber doesn't perish!) ...or get eaten by small scaley rascals!!

Thanks T.Rex! There are so many gadgets out there. Of course, from the other comments, this may be an antique! I will get this week. Also, thanks for the tips on "boatshooting"!

Hey, I have one of those! (Somewhere...) I recall you had to be pretty aggressive with it. I think a lot of people purchased a bulb release with the intention of catching a deer outside their window. That didn't work out too often.
