Description

The sun was just beginning to shed its light into the alley when I pulled up. This was not a good morning. I had received the phone call no one ever wants to get. “Chief, are you awake? This Rusty Sims.” Rusty Sims was the Lieutenant on graveyard shift. “Sir, we’ve got a problem. We’re missing two officers. I thought you would want to know.” “Want to know? I of course want to know!” The details were sketchy but as I got dressed Sims filled me in. Two officers had responded to to a call in the industrial district. When they failed to answer a radio check, responding units had found only the patrol unit parked at the head of the alley where the call came from and no sign of the two officers. A thorough search by the entire shift had failed to find any sign of them. As I got out of the car Lt. Sims rushed over. “Sorry to wake you like that but we can’t find any thing.” Did you call in the day shift?” “Yes sir, Capt. Roberts was notified and at his direction we did just that.” I’ve also requested we cancel days off also, but.” Sims was plainly uncomfortable with my question. Lt. I’m not trying to tell you how to do your job. I’m just telling you that you have the authority to do what you need to do to get the job done.” “Yes sir, thank you sir. Day Shift came in early, Crime lab is on the way, although I’m not sure what they’re looking for. The neighborhood has been canvassed. I have an officer standing personal guard on the phone booth the calls came from until the ID people get here. We have found a night watch man at the Emerson plant who was working last night and he noticed nothing unusual during the time in question other than the power went out for around 15 minutes. “ As Sims was filling me in. One of the Sergeants brought a civilian over to us. “Sir this is Jackson Franks, he’s the night watchman at the Emerson place. It’s the building with the walkway across the street down there.” He pointed halfway down the street . “Mr. Franks, you know the Lt., This is Chief Stroud.” Franks was an older man who looked as though he had been here when this district was built. Franks turned to me. “Well sir as I was telling the Sgt. Here there was a power outage at about 1:30. No big deal because we got a backup. The backup came on and ...................................” Franks just stopped and stared, mouth open. “Uh, Mr. Franks is there something wrong? I looked to where he was now pointing.” “That building, the Blass Building,. That War Bonds poster. I haven’t seen that poster since they removed it when they repainted the building. That was in 1945, just after the war was over . It’s been gone since then.” Well When I started this, The title seemed approptiare. But now.......... Buildings Stone Mason's Back Streets with a few mods. (gotta love his stuff) Vue 7i (yes I'm still working with 7i) for the rest. Poster by that guy, what's his name, you know the one who did all those magazines covers, the guy who did himself........Oh yeah Norman Rockwell. (Tip of the hat to him) Comments always welcome (just as long as you don't critic the title) Oh what the heck, go ahead. ;) Thanks for taking a peek.
