Description
Destroyers have been nick named (among other things) Greyhounds. Sleek and fast they were tasked with protecting the bigger ships. Here two speed by while in the background the biggies go about their own chores.
The nearer destroyer is a Benson Class Destroyer. A class of thirty ships these were designed after the Washington Treaties expired. They were slightly larger and heavier than the preceeding classes to take advantage of heavier construction methods to support a new engine room/boiler layout. They and their earlier brothers were heavily involved in most of the surface actions in the Pacific during the early part of the Second World War.
The second Destroyer is an early Fletcher class. Called 2100 tonners the Fletchers were designed with all the restrictions of the earlier classes over come.
Normally the US Navy placed like destroyers of the same class in the same squadrons. However in the early Pacific campaigns losses of ships made composite squadrons a neccessity.
The Cruiser is a New Orleans Class Cruiser and the carrier is Neals USS Enterprise modified by me.
Technical note: If I thought researching the vatious New Orleans Cruisers was a pain. I found that the pre war destroyers were worse! It took weeks to figure out which ship had which upgrades. Five turrets, no four, wait..some with two turrets forwars and partial or no turrets aft (just the guns) radars, AA guns, portholes covered/not covered, one anchor, no two. ARGGGH!!! One destroyer had three cammo schemes in an 18 month period. Great fun!!!
All ships (and planes) done in Wings 3D.
Rendered in Vue 7I (are they up to Vue 10?)
Comments critisisms and all that kind of stuff are welcome. I know, I know, no girls, Fairys, Elves,Orges, Dragons or that kind of stuff. But bear with me.

Wow... f***'in' awesome render. Can't see many details on the boats, but the viewer doesn't need details to appreciate the sheer drama in this image. That said, I hope you will show us some close-ups of these models and share some of your techniques. I'm been struggling with Wings3d for awhile, now and would love to be able to create some decent models.

Wonderful modeling and like your telling us about the research behind it. The scene is so realistic with the bad weather and appropriate layout of the elements....and the best part of it is there's not a single large breasted sailor in the entire scene!...a stowaway of course : ) 5 from me.

Fine Render mate! The hazy conditions as sea, Atlantic or in the Pacific hid some if not all the details so.... Picture looks great! If you want to get REALLY confused, try working out who was in the Med just on the Royal Navy side, then add the US! Then take a headache pill! lol Rob

I'm sort of left at FRAM II and how it left the destroyers and Garcia class and how it cutoff Navy ship size at 650 ft AWL and DE. Of course hydrofoils were being tried and SCS was anything from an ACV to an aircraft carrier. I did look into guns bores in inches and barrel lengths in calibers based on how the calibers went down for 8 inchers compared to 5 inchers. I slipped back to early black powder cannon to understand this. Quad 20's and twin 40's is the veterans I grew up with and said farewell to in 1965. Ever seen a Kamikaze up close?!!! Yesteeray a grey wolf made a fast pass from behind on me as I walked out of the front of the house to get the paper. ??? Was it a baby cougar? It seemed to bound as it hit the street and jumped the silt barrier to the lot across the street. Definitel a long equally busshey in length tail. I found out online they can climb trees and are about 38 inches long. I guess it wasn't a cougar by the range here. Definitely not a skunk, or raccoon which move slowly. Probaly just stalking by scent as it made a similar pass when my sister came out on the porch a few days earlier. No high pitched yelping in fear and it came quite close to me maybe 8-10 feet it could have easily avoided by going over a limestone retaining wall down to the next yeard.
