Description
This is an extreme zoom on a small pond on a farm that I have passed hundreds of times in my car. Last week, I took a walk on that road for the first time & took this photo of the pond. I think unconsciously, this photo was inspired by a painting that had a big impact on me as a child.
When I was growing up in NYC, I would go the Museum of Modern Art often & one of the paintings that I kept going back to & that never failed to amaze me was a huge version of Monet's Water Lilies. Monet painted dozens (maybe hundreds?) of versions of water lilies from his garden in Giverny, but this version is a triptych made up of three panels, each of which measures 6' 6 3/4" x 13' 11 1/4", for a total length of over 41 feet! It occupied an entire room by itself. When viewed from the far end of the room, it clearly looked like lilies in a pond, but from a few feet away, it looked like a pure abstract made up of random patches of color. Aside from the prodigious amount of patience & work it must have taken to paint it (Monet worked & reworked it for 12 years), I found it remarkable that one painting could be seen in two such different ways.

Fantastic capture, Love the color of the water. fantastic story as well. I think the things that inspire us most are the ones that change us most.

I had the pleasure of seeing one of Monet's water lily paintings in Kansas City (they have a fabulous museum there) and had that same experience. From a distance, it's clear what the picture is. Up close, it's just gorgeous colors with soft edges and transitions, and it's almost better from that distance! Even before I read your narrative, your image brought Monet's work to mind. Beautiful!
