OMG - a pay phone!!! There are very few left around here. FSH acquired Qwest's pay-phone service several years back, so they're running those now. It's just another phone company. Lol.

they are a thing of the past.I think one reason why they lost popularity besides cell phones was in a larger area with different area codes , the private payphones wanted charge calling to another area code even if it was across the street outstanding find

I think you must have been near a CONTROL Headquarters building. If you stake out that place you'll get to meet Maxwell Smart. Or even better? Agent 99! ;)

Yes and some of the Deluxe models were encased in a crystalline and silver box with a folding door. It permitted the operator to attempt telephonic communications in something called privacy.

WOW! WOW! I remember when these were new, as opposed to the "old fashioned" kind you could actually step into, even if the folding door (always etched with graffiti) never really closed right, or never opened right, once you were inside. I also remember seeing Superman (with Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder) on the big screen and actually getting the joke of Clark Kent looking for an actual phone booth only to see a line of these. So much for the old Superman doing his quick-change in an enclosed (though largely invisible) space! This is a great shot of something soon-to-be extinct. I think there might be two or three of them in Chicago.
