Description

Between 1890 and 1910 (known as the Endicott Period for all you military history buffs) the U.S. military implemented a plan for coastal and harbor defense. They built concrete coastal artillery batteries, and installed submarine mines in what were considered to be strategic waterways. Bremerton, Washington is the site of what is now known as the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. Established in 1891, it was considered to be important enough to be assiduously guarded. Rich Passage, the waterway that leads directly to Bremerton, was mined during that time as part of the defence plan for this area. This ring is part of what's left of that operation. It's been in that rock for over a hundred years. .......... We'll be home this afternoon! It's been a fantastic trip, we've enjoyed every day of it, and it will be nice to be home. Of course there will be more pictures ... :P

That is one old anchor-ring; as you can see it's caused a ring-complimenting depression in the rock, which is probably limestone, since limestone has that habit of...well...um...melting during extended periods of atmospheric weather. Okay, the rock doesn't melt so much as it weathers away very quickly, especially in the presence of fresh water, well, as fresh as rain might provide. I really like this and it reminds me of some of the things I saw in Cesky Krumlov and in Prague...similar rings used simply to tie boats to the little stairways and nooks carved into the walls of river-fronting buildings or some such place. Those rings are still there and are positively ancient, and this made me think of those, only in English rather than in Pavl's Czech, and I have to say, that is a good thing. I love the composition: the nice surprise of beautifully-colored water with leaves floating in it so nicely. This is a brilliant composition!

I can almost feel the waters gradually moving around me - especially if you stare at them long enough - help, must be getting seasick ;) fun aside, extraordinary presentation ... welcome back home on Terra Firma, BB
