Description

Eleven miles. No kidding. Standing on a dock yesterday in the small town of Manchester, Washington, on the Kitsap Peninsula. The ferry on the left is headed for Bremerton, and the ferry on the right is headed for Vashon Island. The point of land that covers the right-hand half of the image is West Seattle. The tall black building on the right is the Columbia Center. Just above the left-hand ferry is the Space Needle with its currently orange roof. Give me a break on the quality of this hand-held, zoom image ... the distance from my lens to Seattle is something just under eleven miles. This is a single shot, cropped, not a pano, btw. I've left this large, so if you zoom you'll see lots of stuff, including huge amounts of noise! Still ... I couldn't resist showing it to you. This is a view of Seattle you can't get anywhere else!

This is an interesting capture Tara. Could have sworn it was a pano. I must have driven through there before, but as usual I was more intend on getting to where is was going (where was that)? Never have seen Seattle from there!

Nice photo. Noise? I was listening and looking for it, but... no luck. And where's the "monster"? I just commented it on Bill's latest post. Yupp, that huge one - is it hiding behind the Columbia Center? You can't guess? I'm referring to Mt. Rainier. I recall seeing it when in Seattle 1978. Just being that close to a volcano gave me the creeps. Then came Mt. St. Helens in 1980. Brrrr.... I hope you and Bill live a safe distance away. Keep up the good work! These photos are a veritable travelogue! :-)

Great view of the city Tara, one day I may get the chance to do one of my legendary 20+ shot panos and have my honey by my side, life would be so sweet for me then :}

I guess the noise you're talking about is the view across the sound... (sorry, couldn't resist :o) Great pic - but does that mean your holiday has come to an end?

What a wonderful view it is; as far as cities go they don't get much prettier IMHO. Beautiful!

WOW! In the mornings when I worked as a dental equipment mover, I always managed to get a look at downtown Chicago, on our way to Elmhurst, or somewhere like that, and I was always somewhat bothered by the absolute, massive amount of clutter downtown Chicago seems to present, when you look at it. There is no clutter in this image. I love the idea that Seattle looks like a city, rather than a hoard of buildings collected by a building collector with OCD. The composition is perfect with the city sandwiched in between two elemental components (air and water.) I think the grain/noise works well here, and the overall mood is superb. I rather like the ferries: they make me think of spaceships. But naturally, I'd think of spaceships...but then, I can see a pickle and think of spaceships. I'm odd like that. This is brilliant.

Some years ago Kodak made film that could produce printed images almost this size. Today we have so much more flexibility. The fact that we could see eleven miles, let alone capture so much digital detail is amazing. Glad we got such a perfect day at Manchester. What were you doing 50 years ago on that May day?:)
