It is a couple years later when we hook up with little brother again. His older brother has joined the guard and been sent to Afghanistan. He is currently on another tour of duty and has been noticeably showing signs of stress and wear. Little brother tried to talk older brother out of his Corvette, but older brother consistantly refused and has stashed the Vette away in a secret hiding place. Even their father doesn't know where it is. Little brother is turning 18 this year. His father has spoiled him quite a lot since older brother isn't around to keep an eye on him. Little brother has taken to spending time with less than honorable members of society at his school and has been dropping to lower levels of scholastic achievement as a result. His father has promised him a big surprise for his 18th birthday. The day before it arrives his father sends his office manager, Mildred Spannerwhacker, out to their estate to take little brother out to look at cars. The family chauffer drives them into the city. Mildred tells little brother of their mission, (and whispers under her breath she hopes the boy doesn't get too carried away with his choice.) She doesn't have to hold her breath very long. As they drive down the long auto mall parkway, little brother sees the showroom of a specialty Corvette dealer. He convinces Mildred this is where he wants to look. They are in the showroom less than 10 minutes and little brother is staring dreamy eyed at a bright red hopped up Corvette with all the extras. It shouldn't set daddy back too much, he tells Mildred. After all, there are so many other much more highly priced sets of wheels out there he could have set his sites on. But he has gotten hooked on Corvettes after driving his older brother's those few times when he was younger. Mildred approaches the dealer, who is by now licking his chops in anticipation of making a killing on this sale. Little does he realize that the bank that holds the loan for his business is owned by none other than little brother's father. After a quick calculation, the dealer passes a figure over to Mildred for what he feels he wants for this Vette. Mildred makes a call to little brother's father and informs him of where they are at and the choice and price of vehicle little brother has made. There is a long pause on the other end. Then the father tells Mildred to put the dealer on the line. It isn't very long before the big smile is drained off the dealer's face. He learns much to his chagrin that he won't be making as much profit on this vehicle as he had hoped! Well, at least there will be a little profit on this unit which is better than nothing! He consoles himself with that thought. Wrap it up, says Mildred. We will retrieve it tomorrow. Make sure its ready! As she and little brother leave the dealership, little brother can hardly contain his excitement. Mildred tells him his father has some conditions if he is to be allowed to keep this Vette. One is that he must improve his GPA. The other is to stop running around with his highschool hoodlums buddies. Little brother is only too willing to concede to his father's demands, fornow. He thinks to himself, 'whatever. The old man probably won't care or remember about these points for very long anyway.' Such a sad state of affairs. His father means well, but he is just too busy making millions to be able to spend any time with them. And little brother's mother is far too busy with for her high society social circles to be bothered with raising little brother. If these parents only knew where their true wealth is.
