Description

NO it is NOT a wasp! Nomada goodeniana. One of several species of related nomad bee, all of which look more like wasps than bees. A cuckoo of other solitary bees, such as Andrena species, and often seen around the emtrance holes of their nests. The female lays her eggs in the cells of the host:these hatch and the larvae feed on the pollen and honey provided , and on the hosts eggs or larvae. Info from Richard Lewington's beautiful Guide to Garden Wildlife pub.by BWP.

Thank you for the info, Andrea. What a great capture! I like so much those two yellow dots on his head, it looks like if it has two eyes on the back to me :). About my last upload "Yes, you know this flower well, Andrea". It is a kind of clover, which often is used as a green manure on fields. If I remember well, Juliette did an upload last year from the same flower. My capture was taken Wednesday in 'the wild' (Gerendal) :)

Awesome capture Andrea. If I saw this bee, I would probably think it is a wasp. I love the info you are able to share with us about these images. I have to admit, I have learned quite a bit just from following your gallery for the last couple of years.

Fascinating. So this is a sort of homeless bee...one that might live in a cardboard box under a bridge if no other bees' nests are found:) Like your explanation.

Stunning capture, Andrea! For one who has seen his share of wasps - but that was a long time ago - it is evident that this is not one, but rather the insect you named in your title.

I think I would've thought it a wasp too, though on second look, I think the wings are too wide for a wasp. but I'm no expert, and only know the common local waspish characters! She looks quite lovely on forget-me-not, at least I think that's what she is sitting on.

Supe pic, I saw one of these once on Scabiosa, went to snap it and it flew off, bummer.
